GarageSaleNation - Why use Craig’s List for free when you can pay $10?
Give me a break!, I just don't get it, Web 2.0, Waste of time, Shouldn't Exist, Service June 24th, 2007
GarageSalesNation was created to aggregate garage sale locations & information in a centralized site. No more aimless wondering looking for deal. The only problem is that everyone already uses Craig’s List for this. And Craig’s List allows people to post for free. That said, it is nice to be able to see garage sale locations on a google map. Data in Craig’s List often doesn’t easily facilitate this. From what I can tell, GSN doesn’t list any items for sale or prices–just the location and hours. To me that’s an obvious opportunity for improvement. Will this catch on? I kinda doubt it–CL is already a widely used and pretty decent tool.Rating:

Thanks for the great review. When Leno and Letterman rip on the site, then it will be truly a success. That said.
You would be shocked to know over a hundred people a week pay $29.95 to list garage sales in the Sacramento Bee. Over 150 people pay $29 to $45 at the Chicago Tribune every summer weekend.
Some people prefer not to dig through entire blogs about someone’s personal life to find out when and where a garage sale is. Some people love the blog.
GarageSaleNation does list a horrifically simplified version of what is for sale. Also, anyone adding their Garage Sale directly through GarageSaleNation, may add prose.
Over 50% of garage sales nation wide simply list, “collectibles, clothes, household items” which is prose for “I’m having a yard sale”.
Thanks for the critique. I’ll have it framed.

I read an article in the local paper and I think it’s a great idea. It’s great when someone can take something they like and create a business. I think the site could improve the home page and maybe lower the price to post an ad. Maybe offer a free basic ad and then charge for a premium ad that offer features. Maybe ad a feature that maps out the a route to hit the garage sales you want to visit. DJ

It would be a cool idea–if it were free. And had a bit more information about what was at the sale. Not all sales are created equal. It would be helpful if people could learn a bit more before hopping in the car or on the subway.

Well, the idea is great, but if you want a better version, you should check out thriftmapper.com which right now is only does the Portland, OR area. However, I exchanges emails with the guy who runs the site, and he says he plans on adding more metro areas soon. Watch for it. I have used it a lot this summer and it has saved me a ton of time.
